Construction Inspector role at Oregon Department of Transportation

Job open and fully funded following the 2025 Special Legislative Session.

The Role

This is an inspector position ensuring contractors follow plans and specifications. The role supports ODOTs mission by ensuring safe and reliable transportation system. The position is fully funded and open for recruitment.

A Day In The Life
  • Inspect and monitor construction work to ensure materials and workmanship conform to project plans and specifications.
  • Measure and record contractor work and prepare source documents to justify payment.
  • Monitor project safety procedures and construction methods.
  • Spot-check survey stakes, grades, stations, locations, and alignments before material placement.
  • Ensure all required tests are completed, documented, and submitted to ODOT in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and submit documentation and reports per contract and regulatory requirements to protect ODOTs interests.
  • Requires working long and flexible hours, including on-call 24/7, nights, outdoors at least 50% of time, occasional travel with overnight stays and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Work is performed near traffic and construction equipment, in adverse weather, near hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials, requires climbing ladders, moving around rough terrain and working at heights.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in construction inspection or surveying.
  • OR an associate degree in civil or transportation engineering and one year of engineering technician experience in construction inspection or surveying.
  • OR a bachelors degree in civil or transportation engineering.
  • OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Related experience may include construction management, forestry, geography, geology, geomatics, mathematics, physics, remote sensing, and urban planning.


Special Qualifications

Driving is an essential function. Must have a valid US driver license with an acceptable driving record. Driver records will be checked on final candidates.

What Wed Like To See
  • Experience in construction inspection and contract administration Highway preferred.
  • Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications.
  • Experience applying knowledge of mathematics, survey principles, engineering and construction practices and procedures.
